"And then Doctor - oh, but then..."

The Doctor frowned as Carmen spoke, her worried face speaking volumes about the prophecy she was seeing before she'd even made it. Whatever she was about to say, it couldn't be good. Not that it was good already - he'd already heard that your song is ending soon lark once before, from the Ood, and hearing it again just strengthened a horrible suspicion he had about what that meant.

And then she actually came out with the rest of it. "He will knock four times."

And this time the Doctor just stared at her as she walked off, her expression dark, back home to her chops and gravy. He could feel Itsuki looking at him - and that was enough of a problem in itself, having Itsuki around to hear that. For now, though, he'd do whatever he did recently with situations like this.

Avoid them until he had more time to think.

"Come on," he said abruptly, "Back in the TARDIS. We've had quite enough excitement for one day, don't you think?"

As Donna had so helpfully pointed out many times, Itsuki and the Doctor were more than a little similar when it came to difficult situations. Clam up, refuse all help, and pretend everything was all right. Any offers to help or to rally the more powerful members of the community would be thoroughly shot down, whether they'd be effective or not. And Itsuki was very nearly sure that something would be effective, when the time came.

"I don't see any particular reason to let the community at large know," he said idly. And while the Doctor was lulling himself into a false sense of martyr-like security, he'd be investigating things very carefully.

The Doctor raised his eyebrows. "You know me too well," he said, but any usual joviality that would have gone with that comment was gone at the moment. In fact, the Doctor's tone was almost subdued. "I was just about to ask you not to tell anyone. I don't want anyone else mixed up in whatever's going to happen, and that includes you, alright?"

Of course, he didn't really expect Itsuki to do what he was told. After all, when did anybody really listen to him? But it was worth a try, and this time, the Doctor fully intended to actually succeed in stopping anyone from putting themselves at risk. Anything that could happen that was powerful enough to... well, he didn't want any of his friends up against whatever was coming for him in however many days, weeks, months or years. Especially with who was almost definitely going to be involved.

[philoxidizes]

"I can imagine the conversation now. 'Suzumiya-san, let me tell you about my trip. It seems the Doctor's not going to be around much longer. Well, time to start the club meeting.'" He shook his head. "I like to think I have a little more sense than that."

[timey_wimey]

"You know what I mean," the Doctor said impatiently, although in spite of himself, the corners of his lips did quirk upwards slightly.

[philoxidizes]

"Maybe Tieria, then? 'There's your update on the state of affairs, I suppose I'll leave you to wallow in your own futility.' I have full confidence that you'll be able to handle things on your own." Lies. Horrible, horrible lies. Good thing for his poker face.

The Doctor rolled his eyes. "You're a laugh a minute, Itsuki, really."

[philoxidizes]

"I try." He clapped his hands together as if declaring the conversation over and done with. "Now, then. Shall we move on?"

[timey_wimey]

He nodded, shortly. He had a nagging feeling that he wasn't quite out of the woods as far as this conversation went just yet, but he'd take what he could get.

"Yeah. So," he said, trying to lighten his tone. "Somewhere quiet next, then?"

[philoxidizes]

"If you can manage it. I'll take a world with just a weak police state, or an alien that wants to destroy a town rather than a planet."

The Doctor raised an eyebrow. "Cheeky," he grumbled. "Not every planet I go to has trouble brewing."

"Just like how not every world that finds itself attached to the community has fantastical elements?" He chuckled. "In any case, it's probably more interesting, doing things your way. Not many children daydream about going to an alien planet, buying some souvenirs, and having a relaxing lunch."

[timey_wimey]

"Depends on what you mean by fantastical," he retorted stubbornly. "By the 51st century space travel and inter-species interaction is commonplace, fantastical is all relative."
