another - and he had jotted each one down. had recorded it. had made certain to call in the quiet of the house. in the quiet of his own room. when the phone was left to the bottom drawer of the desk. after much grumbling of needing, perhaps, a new one. (and he had inherited the ringing tone of another - and another - no matter how many times he had turned it off. had muted it. had -- )

and so, with the calling of another combination - another variation - he started to draw some connection. some parallel. (three from here. three from --)

[ because he's the Doctor, he takes a while to pick up. who answers phones when you're busy exploring the galaxy anyway? good lord. it almost rings enough to go to voicemail, but just as it's about to hit that point, there's the unmistakable sound of fumbling as he presses the answer button while simultaneously trying to get the phone - unfamiliar number and all - to his ear. the sound of his voice, faint but getting closer: "blimey, who's trying to call me now?" and then: ]

Hello? If it's an alien emergency you'll have to hang on for a little bit longer until I can get back to my ship, I'm a bit tied up with some... erm, well, with some stuff on this very interesting planet in the Logoros system. If you're someone from the community, same thing I'm afraid. How can I help?

[ he can't quite make out the beginning. can't quite make out the rougher sounds and shades of a human voice - words forming too quickly. too far from him. and while he is able to glean the break of syllables, he knows he has interrupted something. by the end. he knows he has cut this person off (another) in the middle of something. and while there is a heavy pause, it seems shorter than what it could be. short than what it might be. (than what it should.) ]

... I don't need it. [ and while he doesn't mince words - it isn't rude. it isn't too rude. offset by a voice that seems a little too boyish for it. a little too young. (and there's a beat, here. almost - and the intention is gained and lost, within an eyeblink: )] It's a wrong number.

[ he knows he's from the community, even so. he knows this is something he could mark-off, even so. names and places, foreign to him. half-caught.

[ well. that was enough to momentarily put him off-balance. there's a pause down the line, during which the Doctor blinks. it's not often he gets people calling him as a wrong number. in fact, he can count the number of times that's happened on one hand. people hardly ever call him as it is, unless they're trying to call him back somewhere.

which means there's probably something more to this than just a wrong number. interesting. ]

Oh. Well then, in that case, sorry I got in the way of whoever it was you were actually trying to call. [ beat. ] Just as an aside to sate my own curiosity are you from the community?

[ there's a heavy beat. a heavier beat, as he processes as the apology (undeserved). he doesn't want him to give anything he hasn't pulled for. he doesn't want him to give him that kindness. not when he cannot return it. not when he can give him nothing. not when -- (and it rests like a weight. it rests like a burden. it rests like a knot he cannot shake or disentangle.) and he did not want a part of it. he does not want a part of it. (and it pulls at something he does not wish to think of. it pulls at something he does not want to think of. it wakes and diminishes. it burns up and freezes. sharp.)

don't think of me. please. don't look at me. please. don't--]

... You didn't. [ and it pushes back burden. it pushes back kindness. it pushes back. and he builds a wall with words. he builds a wall away from him. away from others. away from -- and eventually: ] Yeah.

Hm. [ it's a small, curious sound, as if he's both mulling it over and confirming it to himself. ] Certainly explains how you managed to get connected to me, in that case. Probably the community up to its old tricks again. Honestly, you'd think after this long it'd get bored with it...

It's annoying. [ and there's a small note of affirmation in his voice. a small note of confirmation in his voice. a kind of echo. if automatic. a mannered reflex. ] It's always called like this.

Hm, really now. And I don't suppose you've just been ignoring it every time it's called?
