So. It would seem we've got some sort of virus going around again. A mind-reading virus? Thought projection virus? Whatever it is, it's giving me a dreadful headache. It's just a tad annoying, wouldn't you say? I mean, I don't know about you, but quite frankly the idea of someone being able to read my mind is more than a little uncomfortable.

Typical, the one virus which is actually a bother and a nuisance for me to get hit by - not that any of the others weren't but this one is really taking the mickey - and I get hit by it. Not to mention that now I can hear all those other minds chatting away up here. How many must that be, a hundred? Two hundred? Feels like it at least. It's bad enough when they're on the edge of everything, now they're just there! In the thick of it!

... Aaaand this is not a good show of keeping my mind blank. Come on, Doctor, think. Or rather don't, actually. Blank thoughts. Blank blank blank.

So, what I mean to say is, if anyone needs me, I'll be in the TARDIS, trying to keep the old mind blank. So any world-threatening emergencies will just have to wait! Or not, as it happens. We'll see about that. - no, blank thoughts.

Gift? OH - oh, of course, that gift! Well, the psychic paper needs a bit of practice before it works every time.

Hm. Practice which I haven't been putting into it, I'm afraid. There's been little call for it thus far, and few situations I could use it in without running the risk of detection. (Unfortunately, it's more conspicuous than the Magatama, though it's more accurate in return. Then there are the...moral ramifications.)

Well, it's always handy to have on you in case of emergencies, at any rate.

What's a Magatama when it's at home? Actually, no, better not ask. Invasion of privacy and all, although really that's exactly what this virus is...

Fortunately (or, perhaps, miraculously) no emergencies of that sort have cropped up since.

(What most of the viruses are, for that matter.) Then you see my point. (Without my having to make it. How convenient.) Wright's had to grapple with similar questions, and I find myself agreeing with the conclusions he seems to have come to.

Indeed. Though, given Wright's luck, and its tendency to bleed into others', it's more worrying than reassuring.

(And for some members more than others.) That these tools aren't to be used in a cavalier manner. Under certain circumstances, with certain stakes...a man may be forced to use the resources at his disposal. But he should carefully consider the meaning of such use, and take responsibility for it where applicable.

Wright has assured me he uses the Magatama only in the course of his work, and I (believe him, now) intend to do the same.

Well, it's not as if I use the psychic paper if I don't need to. Besides which if I wanted to read someone's thoughts there's several ways I could use that are about five times more direct and about twice as easy.

The world, or the universe. Or that person's life, it it came down to it. And there's no need to mentally dot at me. I ask permission before I do anything like that, you know.

And if the situation is one in which gaining permission would negate the purpose of reading a person's mind? If the act must be done surreptitiously, do you feel you have the authority to make the decision for them?

Trust me, it's possible.
